Preparing for move-in
Move-in day is an exciting time and by preparing yourself and your items ahead of time you can ensure that your experience is as smooth as possible.
Contact your roommates
Talk with your roommate(s) beforehand so that you can arrange who will be responsible for bringing things on move in day. This way you can avoid having 8 bowls and no spoons.
Label all of your items with your first and last name
This is helpful to our volunteers when they are helping you move your items to your room.
Student Property and Liability Insurance Program
Thompson Rivers University, Housing Services, and Marsh Canada Ltd. have partnered to operate our mandatory property and liability insurance coverage program, ensuring that all residents and the university are protected. Learn more about the Student Property and Liability Insurance Program.
Bring your own cart/trolley
While the residence does have some carts available on move in day, we often run out very quickly. Bringing your own cart will guarantee that you will have something to help you move your heavier items.
Arrive between your designated move-in time
Prior to move in day you will receive an email asking you to sign up for your preferred move-in time. By showing up during your chosen time slot, you ensure that all the move in services will be available to you and allow us to provide a smoother move in experience for all. Please note move in times may vary based on availability.
Make a plan for guests
During the first few weeks of residence we do not allow guests in the building. This allows our staff and residents time to get to familiarize themselves with each other. This means that anyone helping you to move in will need to find alternative arrangements if they need to stay overnight in Kamloops.
What to bring
North Tower
- Towels, shower curtain, comforter, pillows, blankets, bed linens (suitable for a double-width, queen-length bed — 54 inches by 80 inches)
- Cleaning products; dish soap, mop, bucket, broom, dustpan, rags, etc.
- Alarm clock/radio
- Computer (if required)
- Toaster, coffee maker, kettle, iron, toaster oven, foreman grill, induction cook top, etc. (absolutely no hot plates of any kind — this is for your safety)
- Laundry detergents and fabric softener
- Pots, pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, dish rack, garbage bags, etc.
- Toilet paper, plunger, first aid kit, personal hygiene items, etc.
- All school supplies required
- Gaming system, or streaming system — adaptors may be needed.
- Hand-held vacuum, broom/duster, etc.
McGill Residence
- 5 x 8 carpet
- Toaster oven
- Bed linens and pillow

East Village Dalgleish (Coyote Den)
- Towels, comforter, pillows, blankets, bed linens (suitable for your bed type; shared bedrooms have single beds and single bedrooms have double beds)
- Cleaning products; glass cooktop cream cleanser, dish soap, dish cloth, dish towels, all purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, bucket, rags, etc.
- Alarm clock/radio
- Computer
- Toaster, coffee maker, kettle, iron, toaster oven, air fryer, etc. (absolutely no hot plates of any kind — this is for your safety)
- Laundry detergents and fabric softener
- Pots & pans, dishes, glasses, utensils, dish rack, garbage bags, etc.

What not to bring
- Animals/pets
- Weapons, which includes but is not limited to hunting knives, swords, firearms, air guns, pellet guns, ammunition, and or replica guns or ammunition
- Hot plates and deep fryers or appliances with open elements
- Candles and incense
- Kegs of beer, beer bottles, single serving glass containers
- Drug paraphernalia
- Hooks or nails that will be placed in the wall
- Refrigerators or freezers (including mini fridges)
Absolutely nothing is to be pinned, taped, screwed, nailed, or stapled into any wall or furnishing within your room.
Hot plates and open heat sources are not permitted. Only CSA approved electrical appliances with automatic shut off feature are allowed (such as kettles, toaster ovens, irons). Only refrigerators and freezers provided by the TRU Housing will be allowed in the suites. Prohibited items will be confiscated.
Move-in day
Move-in day is one of the days we look forward to most at TRU Housing. We will send out information so you know how to enter campus and when to arrive. If you’ve acknowledged our communication and have prepared yourself well, this day will be a breeze.
Once you arrive you will be given your room number and our friendly volunteers will help you move your belongings into your new home.
It’s as easy as that.
What next? Make sure you check in with the front desk or your resident advisor so you know which event to go to next.
Parent/guardian info session
During move-in day we host a brief parent info session which helps to provide some here-and-now context for the year their student is about to have. This information session aims to share with parents and guardians our policies and procedures, provide a space to answer any questions and focuses on how parents can support residents in getting the most out of their residence experience.
Inspections
When you move into the building you will receive an inspection form that you can use to document the state of your room when you arrived. If there are a few scratches on your desk or a few pinholes in the wall, this is where you want to write that down. We will collect these from all residents and at the end of the year we will do another inspection to look for any discrepancies. If there are any chargeable items these will be paid out of your security deposit. The goal of using inspections is to hold students accountable to maintaining their room in great condition so that others may enjoy it in the future.
Please note that if there are items that need to be fixed you will need to create a maintenance request noting these items.
Winter break closure
At the end of the first term comes the first examination period of the year followed by our winter break closure. This is an important time for all students as they study relentlessly to try to ace those exams. That is why we have our students leave TRU Housing on the earlier of: 24 hours after their last exam or 11 a.m. on the day after the examination period ends. You will be re-granted access to your room the weekend before classes start.
It’s important to note that you do not need to move out of your room, but there is a winter break checklist that we need students to follow so that you don’t come back to rotting food or a power-surged laptop. This can be found posted in the Residence prior to exams or, as always, you can ask the front desk.
Withdrawing from TRU Housing
If you find yourself in a situation where you can no longer live in TRU Housing, you must speak with a Residence Manager immediately. Moving out of TRU Housing early does have financial implications so we encourage you to refer to your Student Residence Agreement for an explanation of your financial obligations.
Preparing for move-out
Similar to the winter break closure, to respect the studying that occurs during the examination period, we do ask students to move out the their suites the earlier of: 24 hours after their last exam or 11 a.m. on the day after the examination period ends.
We realize that this is not a lot of time so it is our experience that it is always best to get ahead in your preparation for move-out. If you remember all the preparation that was needed to move in, you’ll appreciate the planning that will need to go into moving out. We will post a move-out checklist early enough so that you can do just that.
It is possible to move out later than the above noted timelines; however, if this is the case, you will be subject to late move-out fees.
Extending your stay
If you wish to extend your stay into the summer we will need you to create an application for the summer semester. During the summer semester, TRU Housing is open to the general public for accommodation. Therefore it is our procedure that we require all students to live on designated floors. This means that if you are living on another floor at the end of the winter semester, you will need to move to a new room for the summer semester. Thankfully, we find that students enjoy keeping the summer community alive by being close to fellow students.
Winter break
The residence is closed during the winter break. The resident may apply to occupy their room during the winter break period. Winter break applications will be made available to residents by the manager. Applications are due on or before Dec. 1. If the resident’s application is approved, they may be required to pay a small fee ($100) for winter break occupancy before the beginning of the winter break. During the winter break there is limited supervision of the residence, all services are reduced or suspended, and annual maintenance and renovations may occur. To ensure the safety and security of the resident and the residence facilities it is the intention of the manager to limit the number of residents staying during the winter break to a small number of individuals that demonstrate a significant need for residence accommodations.
